"There is something undeniably powerful in this story of two men bound together by a shared childhood and the imaginary games they used to play"

Breaking the Fourth Wall

“There’s a cracking, crackling energy running through Jade City”

The Stage

“So well written by Alice Malseed, we don’t see what’s coming, lost in the boys’ game until the very last.”
I Thank You Theatre

“Nesbitt skilfully guides them through a plot that throbs with humanity and the province’s famous dark humour but also pulls no punches about the violent cost of deprivation and toxic masculinity.”
Greenwich Visitor

“This is a powerful play confronting the consequences of the UK’s lack of social mobility and opportunity”
The Play's The Thing

“Rarely has a production had such a connection to a place; Belfast runs through Jade City like a stick of rock.”
The Spy in the Stalls

“Malseed's script is a skilled and interesting mixture of witty, sharp Belfast vernacular and grim, urban poetry”
Rev Stan's Theatre Blog

Sas and Monty are trapped in this place, and in their heads. From the working men’s to Monty’s empty flat, their only escape comes from playing The Game; where they can be bin men hiding stolen cash under the mattress, seagulls snatching dogs on the high street, or just themselves, free at last, knocking back breakfast cocktails on a sunny beach in Jamaica.

But Sas doesn’t want to play anymore. He wants to talk. About girls, his head and that summer they can’t forget.

Rich in the language of Belfast, and with an original electronic score, Jade City is a lyrical and powerful exploration of growing up and growing apart, about the choices we make and the only choices we have.
