BEFORE I WAS A BEAR

Broccoli and The Bunker presents

BEFORE I WAS A BEAR

written by Eleanor Tindall

directed by Aneesha Srinivasan

"Gorgeous, sparkling and deliciously weird comedy packs serious emotional weight"
The Stage

"It captures the anonymity of London, the emptiness of the bustling city, the hole at its heart without friendship, love and community."
Lyn Gardner for Stagedoor

I’m Cally
And I used to be like you

I used to wear jeans and trainers
and bras, sometimes
I used to buy lettuce with good intentions only for it to turn black and make the whole kitchen smell

I used to be like you, before

Cally’s got a Wednesday night off her job at the pub, so she’s at another pub, her local, waiting for her best friend. And it’s there that she spots him - someone immediately, embarrassingly, recognisable. And it’s there that it starts.

Before I Was A Bear is a frank and comic play about growing up, making mistakes and experiencing the shame women are taught about their bodies and desires. It’s about friendship, how we get punished when we mess up and hot TV detectives.
